I woke up this morning all set to go ride. I decided to wait until morning rush died down a bit. So about 0845 I leave my house to head for the neighborhood trail, it's almost 2 miles from the house. I was doing well, didn't have to stop (only at the stop signs) until I got to the trail start. Had a sip of water and started on my way again. I miss having Eric with me when I am alone, he tends to pace me, and I push myself a little harder, but I am keeping a good pace, about 10 - 15 mph on the trail.
A mile from the start, I was going up a hill when I heard a snapping noise then my whole bike came skidding to a stop because the rear wheel locked up. WTF??
I get off to look at it. crap. A spoke broke and caught the chain. Nice mess. I flip the bike over, tinker with it trying to pull the chain free. These are the time you wish you ahd another pair of arms or at least didn't forget to bring the tool kit : (
I really was hoping I could get the chain free so I didn't have to drag the bike 3 miles home. I fiddled with it for a half an hour before I called for help. I called Eric t o see what he suggested. He said he had to come do some field work in the area and would stop first to see if he could fix it.
I drag my bike off the trail up to a parking lot right off the street. I keep tinkering with the chain while I wait. Eric arrives in his work truck and puts on the spiffy strobe lights (I feel special) he gets some screwdrivers and some pliers and starts trying to free the chain. No dice. It isn't budging.
He put the bike in the back of the truck and takes me home, since he is a nice guy and all.
I took my bike over to our bike man to see what he can do for it. It will cost about 40 bucks to have fixed, new spokes to replace the broken ones, a new chain (I was planning on getting anyway) and the labor. Not too bad. I hopefully can pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully day 2 will be better.
